The movie is actually a Shudder original, so it’ll be. The tension builds well, and you find yourself looking beyond the characters, into the background of the scenes in case there is something demonic lurking there.Īpparently, it only took 12 weeks for Host to get to Shudder, and as quarantine was already in place, the cast had to perform many of the stunts and effects themselves, so you have to admire the production, and the challenge of getting the thing actually made. For those who haven’t signed up yet, Shudder is a streaming service dedicated to horror, thriller, and supernatural titles like Host. The scares are effective, and as a viewer, you are very quickly drawn into the meeting and the séance. If you enjoy these types of films, then I imagine you will get quite a lot from Host. The premise is topical and engaging, and the performances are actually really good, with the cast doing a great job with such a limited palate.

If you’re after a film to scare you witless and teach you the ins and outs of video conferencing, look no further. The meat of it unfolds within the familiar parameters of a 45-minute Zoom call, but there’s enough creepy atmospherics and nastiness crammed in to leave you drained when the call ends. Host wears its debt to found-footage horrors like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity on its sleeve, while briskly reworking the formula into a laptop-based horror with big jumps and relatable bits where the wifi craps out. Major props to director Rob Savage and his cobbled-together cast and crew for whipping up something this fresh and freaky while the rest of us were busy trying to keep up with Joe Wicks on YouTube. Host controls allow you as the host to control various aspects of a Zoom meeting, such as managing the participants. Until someone makes a film about a haunted sourdough starter, this ingenious horror movie will remain the zeitgeistiest thing to emerge from lockdown.
